You sort of had to see it to believe it.
QLD Rogues trainer Toby Edmonds travelled into enemy territory with Maroon Magic making her debut south of the border in Grafton, the move proved a masterstroke but it wasn’t all smooth sailing, in fact just the opposite.
This talented I Am Invincible filly had drawn awkwardly in barrier 9 and the instructions to jockey Andrew Mallyon were to jump well, use her early gate speed to cross the field and try to lead if possible.
Well, as often happens in racing that plan went out the window when no less than three horses kicked up on Maroon Magic’s inside and she was posted wide.
It actually got worse when on the home turn “The Magic” and Mallyon were taken further off the track by a wayward runner.
To most people’s amazement Maroon Magic held her nerve, dug deep and easily finished over the top of the field for a super impressive win.
“If I got a half decent run in transit, she probably wins that on her ear,” Mallyon said.
The winning jockey actually heaped further praise on Maroon Magic “that was as good a win as what I’ve sat on, that was huge” Mallyon added.
Trainer Toby Edmonds will see how she pulls up before plotting her next start, but one thing is for sure – the Qld Rogues have another nice horse on their hands.
