Northern Eyes racing debut for NSW Tycoons

Jul 25, 2024

Northern Eyes racing debut for NSW Tycoons began last Saturday at Wyong under trainer Kim Waugh.

According to Kim, Northern Eyes is expected to “improve out of sight” after that run.

Kim explained in the lead-up to owners this was always very much a “second barrier trial” for Northern Eyes and while he finished fourth over the unsuitably short 1000m journey, he hit the line well with a promise of so much more to come from this beautifully bred son of champion sire Zoustar.

POST RACE FEEDBACK

The instructions to jockey Lee Magorrian were simple, let him jump, he has good tactical speed, settle behind the fast ones and let him hit the line.

And that’s basically how the race panned out.

“If he won it would be a bonus but it was very much another barrier trial,” Kim said.

The winner He’s In Like Flynn is a pure speedster and won like his price suggested $1.50. The Blake Ryan trained gallop now off to Hong Kong to continue his career.

Northern Eyes looks like a Miler and was always going to struggle to keep up but impressed Magorrian.

“Yep beautiful run. He looked outstanding in the yard as most of Kim’s do. He began well and ended up sitting one out one back, when they kicked he was left a little flat-footed but I was really happy with his effort. He was strong through the line and he’s a horse definitely going forward” Jockey Lee Magorrian said.

While only a fourth place, it was very much a mission accomplished by Northern Eyes as Kim continues to learn more of this talented 3-year-old.

“There were no other trials around as we said so it was good to get a run into him on a nice track and not a Heavy track. He’ll improve out of sight on that” Kim Waugh said.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR NORTHERN EYES

The great thing about having a horse can get over a little bit of ground and Kim is thinking a Mile may be Northern Eye’s optimum distance is that there are plenty of choices at a variety of different tracks.

Keep in mind he’ll slowly build up to that Mile option.

“I thought he ran very well, obviously too sharp for him but we knew that. He did get a bit lost on the turn but picked up and hit the line well.

“He has pulled up well, nice, bright and has eaten up very well which is always a good sign. He did leave a bit of feed on Saturday night, but he is a very good doer in the feed bin.

“He had a nice swim on Monday morning and trotted up well, really sound.

“We will step him up in distance now and there’s a few options coming up for him and we will keep you informed,” Kim concluded.

The NSW Tycoons look like they have another nice horse going forward.
